It's all in the Details

The Annuciation Diptych
(Around 1433 - 1435)

Jan van Eyck

Jan van Eyck is amazing. The medium used here is oil on panel. He demonstrates the beauty of grisaille  painting technique. The texture looks just like marble. The faces, clothes, wings, and even to add in the black background to make them stand out in the space shows how much he payed attention to detail. One of my favorite aspects is the reflection. It gives the subjects form and the optical illusion that they are physical pieces you can pick right up.

  1. Van Eyck was truly a master at creating three dimensional form in a two dimensional space.

  2. I searched up the on what the inscriptions on the upper edges of the fictive stone frame refer to the subject of the diptych: first and last sentence between the Archangel, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee" and Mary, "Behold the handmaiden of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word."
