I don't get it :(

Pablo Picasso and Cubism

Woman in an Armchair, 1909-10

Oil on canvas
32 x 25 3/4 in.

Around 1907, Pablo Picasso and his friend, Braque, created a whole new style of art, Cubism. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary Cubism is a style of art that stresses abstract structure at the expense of other pictorial elements especially by displaying several aspects of the same object simultaneously and by fragmenting the form of depicted object. Which is a long way of saying taking an object and turning it into shapes. Pablo Picasso is a very famous artist and he has many fans. I feel that you either like his work or you don't. I am one of the ones that just don't get it. I feel I have to cross my eyes to even tell what it is. Everyone has their own opinion and style. This is just not mine.

  1. I kinda like this painting. It makes you guess a lot. I feel like i can see a lot of things in this painting.I see a guy sitting. I also see like eyes where his chest is. I don't know if anyone else sees that.

  2. During the summer of 1909 when Picasso was in Spain he painted several Cubist portraits of his lover Fernande Olivier. When he returned to Paris his work was noticed even the more. This composition of a seated woman reflects his experiments with human shape into it's surrounding.
